The 3 Days Mount Karisimbi and Bisoke Hike, is the a hiking tour that leads you to the two of Rwanda’s mountains in Volcanoes National Park; Mount Karisimbi and Bisoke. Mount Karisimbi is one of the 8 volcanoes of the Virunga massif region located on the Rwandan side in Volcanoes national park. Hiking the Karisimbi takes two days with overnight at the mountain. Climbing Mount Karisimbi is very strenuous hence you need to be in good shape to go for it.

Mount Bisoke volcano is a dormant volcano part of the 8 volcanoes of the Virunga conservation region of East and Central Africa. Mount Bisoke stands at 3,711 meters with a crater lake and beautiful vegetation at the summit. Hiking mount Bisoke is a 1 day hike which requires good fitness and its a tough steep hike and advisable to take a porter to help carry your water and day pack.

What to Expect

The hike may present a tough challenge for the non-experienced and first-time hikers but with good fitness preparation and endurance can they conquer the muddy trails, and steep climbs to make it to the Crater Lake within four hours. The experienced hikers will find it an easy feat and probably make it to the summit in 3 hours. You also get to observe up-close an array of unique mountain wildlife, including a good chance at encountering the endangered Mountain Gorillas and Golden Monkeys.

Day 1: Early Morning Drive for the Bisoke hike

Depending on your location in Kigali city, you will be met by your tour guide/driver as early as 4:30 am to set off to Volcanoes National park-home to the remaining mountain gorillas in the world, connect directly to the park headquarters for a briefing about the activity as early as 7am, you will then be allocated the ranger guides and you head for the hike.

The hike is strenuous and challenging so you need to be physically fit to do this hike, its takes about 3-4 hours to reach the top with very beautiful and rewarding magnificent views of the forest and Crater lake at the top of the volcano which is totally worth the effort. You will then descend back reaching down by around 4pm.

Connect for your late lunch before proceeding to your lodge for relaxation, dinner and overnight stay at Mountain Gorilla View Lodge/ Le Bambou Gorilla Lodge/Muhabura Hotel.

Day 2: Hike to Moutain Karisimbi

Early morning after your breakfast, with a packed lunch from your hotel proceed to the Kinigi headquarters for registration and briefing you will be escorted by the Ranger guides to Hike Mt. Karisimbi, the fifth highest snowcapped mountain of Africa. Trekking is via Bisoke side and up to an altitude of 3700m half way Mt Karisimbi where you will have an overnight stay.

The hike to the summit offers spectacular and magnificent views of different volcanoes including Nyiragongo and Nyamulagira volcanoes. The hike is strenuous and challenging so you need to be physically fit to do this hike. This is a 6 hours hike with great views different bird species and primates. On reaching at an altitude of about 3700m, you will stop at the first camping site where you will spend a night.

Day 3: Reach The top of Karisibi, Descend down and Depart

6:00am, Have early breakfast, and leave for the park headquarters in Kinigi by 7:00am, to register with the authorities and meet your ranger guides. You undergo briefing about the hiking activity from the rangers for about thirty minutes so that at exactly 8.00am you get into your cars and transfer to the base of the volcano and starting point of the hike.

It is here you are given the hiking sticks that will be very vital in supporting you through the slippery and muddy joints. Here you also find porters for hire to carry whichever items you have on you such as backpacks, water, big cameras, etc. As light as ones bag or item may feel, the weight increases almost by every climb up the mountain.

Later embark on your journey back to Kigali city.
