The 3 days Mount Karisimbi hike, is the most rewarding mountain hike expeditions you will every enjoy in Rwanda. The Karisimbi Mountain (highest of the wight volcanoes in Rwanda) requires at least 2 days to accomplish it; the first hike begins early in the morning taking 6 hours, which involves trekking through the Bisoke side. The first stopover is made at an altitude of 3,700 meters above sea level for relaxation and overnight camping before finishing off the journey the next day.

Day 1: Kigali Airport-Volcanoes National Park – Base of Mount Karisimbi

Upon arrival at the airport in Kigali, you will be warmly greeted and welcomed by one of our experienced driver guide and later you will be driven to Volcanoes national Park – home of the endangered Mountain gorillas and elusive golden monkeys. The transfer drive of 90kms, about 1-2hours drive with simple stopovers from Kigali to Volcanoes national park will take you through impressive country side dotted with undulating hills and sparsely populated local setting. On arrival, you will proceed to your lodge to check in, relaxation and dinner.

Day 2: Begin the hike and ascend to 3,700 meters to the top

Have early breakfast, and report to the park offices by 7am. Carry snacks for the hike, and enough drinking water. Meet the ranger guides for briefing and then drive towards Mountains Karisimbi and Bisoke. At the starting point just outside you shall find the porters to hire for the hike and you will also find a pile of walking sticks to pick from. Along the trail, you will enjoy the views of different bird species and verdant montane vegetation, including the Hagenia – Hypericum forests, a bush of giant Lobelia and Senecio, among other species.
Upon arrival at an altitude of 3,700m, a temporary mountain camp is set up by the guides which will be the hikers’ base for the night, marking the end of this first day.

Day 3: Reach The top of Karisibi, Descend down and Depart

On this morning the hike begins to reach the summit, along the way you will enjoy beautiful morning sun rays across the mountain ranges and unmatched scenery. On a clear day, the view from the peak is spectacular both on the Rwandan and Congolese sides offering clear views of Nyiragongo and Nyamulagira volcanoes in a far distance. The descent trek takes the rest of the second day to accomplish. Finally descend to the base of the mountain and have a late lunch in Kinigi and your assigned safari guide will transfer you back to a hotel in Kigali city or to the airport for your departure flight (depending on the schedule).

 

Rwanda is a small, land locked country in eastern / central Africa of approximately 26,340 sq km. It has five prominent volcanoes and 23 lakes as well as several rivers. A large part of the country has an elevation of between 1,500 and 2,500 meters AMSL.
